Three some take on the elements

During the last month, three local residents from Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida have individually taken on three separate challenges. They all had the same goal, to raise funds for Cudeca Cancer Care.

First, Maggie Woodward of Canillas de Albaida walked her fourth Camino along the northern coast of Spain, 625 kms and if that wasn’t enough, she then continued to follow the coast for a further 200kms and finally 120kms ending at Santiago de Compostela.  A total of 35 days and obtaining sponsorship for both Cudeca and Save the Children.  Full details of her expedition can be followed on www.magwood.me   I asked Maggie how she felt after her fourth Camino and she replied “This adventure pushed me so far outside my comfort zone that I had forgotten where it used to be.”

Martin Robinson also of Canillas de Albaida who only last year was diagnosed with bowel cancer wanted to raise money for the charity. “Cudeca has helped me in so many ways” he explained. On 4th June he swam 200 lengths of Cómpeta Pool with lots of friends cheering him on.  “The Swim for Life was challenging and exhausting but totally worthwhile.  The support I received was overwhelming and I am so grateful for the time and effort everyone put in” he said.

Last but certainly not least, Debi Bond of Cómpeta took on her Coast to Cómpeta 16 km mountain bike climb.  Debi, a Cudeca volunteer for many years, was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year.  She was lucky that after an operation and the removal of a kidney, felt fitter and healthier than ever to attempt her challenge. Debi said “This time last year, I was fearing what direction my future would take. A year on, I’m riding up a mountain pushing my limits and grabbing a hold of life with two hands. Life after Cancer is positive.”

I am sure you will agree that Maggie, Martin and Debi have accomplished fantastic personal goals and at the time of going to press, have raised over 3000euros between them in sponsorship money for Cudeca.  There are also some tins still to be counted!!!  This ensures that Cudeca can continue giving life to days to over 1100 patients per year.

Cudeca Hospice gives their heartfelt thanks to Cindy Jones, Maggie Woodward, Martin Robinson and Debi Bond and all their friends for their kindness and support over many years.
