Also present were the Institute of Innovation for Citizens Welfare, the Official Medical School, the Official Nursing School, the Costa del Sol Hospital, the Virgen de la Victoria Hospital, the Costa del Sol health district, the Health district of Málaga, Croasa, AECC, BBK, Cajasol, Unicaja, the Rotary Club, Coca-Cola, the Málaga Foundation, sponsors, event organisers and many more friends.

On behalf of Cudeca, presentations were made by, Joan Hunt, OBE, President & Founder; Marisa Martín, Chief Executive and Medical Director; Rafael Olalla, Deputy Chief Executive & Financial Director and Trustee of Cudeca and Chief Oncologist of Malága, Dr. Emilio Alba.

The most relevant issue of the day was given by Joan Hunt, who confirmed that with thanks to the fantastic support received from the International community, the care that Cudeca Hospice provides is secure for 2009.

Another year on and we have fulfilled our promise to assist and support our patients and their family. It is difficult to summarise the care we provide in a few lines, however, we can highlight the three most important aspects of the care provided in 2008:

1.The consolidation of the 3 home care teams made possible with a Collaboration Agreement with SAS, plus we have a new 4th home care team, thanks to the Collaboration Agreement with the Town Hall of Rincón de la Victoria. It was possible for 75% of our patients to be cared for in their homes until the very end.

2. The day to day treatment and therapies offered to patients in the Day Care Centre and Rehabilitation Unit are much improved. More than 1000 therapy sessions were given to our patients, thus providing the family with respite time.

3.The continuity of the In-patient Unit, providing intensive treatment to patients in complex situations that are not controllable at home. Clinical stability has been achieved and 35% of patients return to their homes.

4 Cudeca’s participation in a project financed by the Social Obra la Caixa bank for people suffering from advanced illnesses and Psycho-Social Palliative care to their families at a national level.

5 The strengthening of the management sessions for the volunteers program that was first developed in 2008 at specialist volunteer’s course given by Cudeca, which was attended by numerous associations and groups.

Another very important aspect of Cudeca’s mission is to provide specialised training. It was a very successful year for training courses, basic first aid courses for professionals, monographic training sessions, and the organisation and participation of diverse conferences.

Financially in 2008 we received a 38% increase in income. This, together with containing costs, resulted in a reduction of 75% in the deficit that we faced at the commencement of the year.

Our aim is to improve our financial income by finding more sustainable sources, such as: our “Become a Benefactor” Campaign, agreements with the Public Sectors, and the agreements we have with companies via the Social Corporate Responsibility agreement.

Our friends, collaborators, future patients and families, and our team of medical professionals need to know that the future of the Hospice Centre is secure, including all our care programmes, and above all the In-Patient Unit.

It doesn’t matter how small the donation, but we do ask the community to please continue with their support to allow us to care for our patients and their family.

Help us to continue adding life to days

With sincere thanks, Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice.
