Volunteers Luncheon

Every January, all the Cudeca volunteers get together for the annual volunteers´ lunch. For the last few years, the lunch has been held at the Valparaiso Restaurant on the hill into Mijas Pueblo.Coaches are laid on from Torre del Mar, Alora and Nerja to transport the 250 volunteers who attend. The Valparaiso always make efforts to keep the price down and usually the volunteers have to pay about €25 each. After the lunch, awards are made to volunteers over 80 years of age and with more than 5 years service.

Arroyo de la Miel St. Patrick´s Day stall

Phyllis and Margaret, two very loyal Cudeca volunteers, set up a Cudeca awareness table at the Paloma Park in Arroyo de la Miel for the St. Patricks Day celebrations.  In addition to this, they sell second hand books and bric a brac which they have been collecting during the course of the year. The celebrations in the Park usually commence around 11a.m. and go on until late in the afternoon.

Foreign Residents Day stalls

During April, many of the local towns hold "Foreign Residents Days", at which various nationalities resident in the area put up stalls, dress in national costume and provide food and drink from their home countries. Naturally, these days attract a large amount of expatriates living on the Costa del Sol and it is a wonderful opportunity for Cudeca to expand awareness. In recent years, staff from the charity shops in Nerja, Torremolinos and Estepona have successfully run awareness stalls at their local "Foreign Residents Day". If you know of a Foreign Residents Day (other than the ones above) and would be prepared to run an awareness stall there, please contact Laura at the Hospice and she will see how she can help you make it happen!

Bamboozer Bar Darts Tournament

Every year, the Bamboozer Bar in Torremolinos, runs a weekend-long darts "event" in aid of Cudeca. The format of the event varies from year to year, with marathons and team competitions - last year was even an international with expats against locals, with the Spanish Andalucian Darts Association and Benalmádena District Darts League involved. In addition to the competitive darts, there is usually an auction and raffle of items donated by local friends and businesses. The Bamboozer Bar can be found on the "old" N340 on the border between Benalmadena and Torremolinos.

Sunflower Campaign

Each year in May, Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice celebrates its annual ‘Sunflower Campaign’ for a fortnight during the month of June, offering sunflowers, the international emblem of the Cancer Hospice movement, in exchange for donations.
Teams of volunteers are coordinated to go to shopping centres throughout the province of Malaga and sell sunflowers and distribute Cudeca information. Local businesses, clubs, schools, churches and other organisations are also encouraged to take collection tins and sunflowers for the campaign period. The highlight of the campaign is when it joins with the Corpus Cristi celebrations in Benalmadena Pueblo and tables are set up to encourage visitors to the event to donate to Cudeca.

Las Brisas Annual Golf Competition

The Royal Golf Club Las Brisas in Nueva Andalucia, holds a charity golf event each May in order to raise funds for Cudeca. The event is rounded off with a luncheon in the club restaurantand followed by a prize-giving, raffle and auction. The holes on the course are sponsored by local businesses and some of the club members. The continuing commitment of the organisers and club officials at Las Brisas Golf Club is greatly appreciated by Cudeca.

Competa Sponsored Walk

For the last three years, Cindy Jones has organised a sponsored walk on a Sunday in May. The walk goes from Cómpeta to Canillas de Albaida, a distance of 5Km. The walk has its origins from a time when, Instead of travelling back to the UK to join a "Race for Life" (where annually up to 750,000 women participate at one of the numerous venues across the UK), she decided to arrange a local event and support Cudeca.

Please call Cindy Jones for a sponsorship form on tel: 952030215 or e-mail cindyjones19@hotmail.com

One of Cudeca´s main fund-raisiing and awareness events is the Annual Walkathon, usually held in May, and currently sponsored by RENFE. For the last few years, the venue has been the beach promenade below the Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmádena. Participants can collect registration forms from the Cudeca shops or from the Hospice and are requested to get their walk sponsored by as many friends as possible - especially as there are prizes for the top fund-raisers. There are 3 different walks staged over distances of 2, 5 and 10 kilometres, so a distance to suit all fitness levels! Recently we have even had dogs sponsored and, as a result, have had T-shirts produced especially for our canine supporters! The walk is followed by a raffle and auction, accompanied by food and drink, musical entertainment and attractions for the children.

Competa Walk for Life

A fun day out for all the family is promised by Debi Bond when she organises the annual "Walk for Life" in Cómpeta. The registration desk opens from 10am and the event usually starts from the viewing point at Portichuelo at around 11am, then follows the road up to Casa de la Mina. An entrance fee of €10 per adult and €5 per child is collected, along with any donations. After the walk, a free drink, tapas/paella, live music, raffle, auction and other surprises can be on offer.

Malaga Concert at Cervantes Theatre

The first Concert in the Cervantes Theatre in Málaga was held in June 2007, with the second event planned for November 2008. The theatre is owned by the Malaga Town Hall, who kindly arrnaged for it to be made available for Cudeca Hospice to schedule events. In 2007, the star of the show was Bebe Valdez, a Cuban jazz pianist who resides for part of the year in Benalmadena. After visiting the Hospice he decided that the best way inwhich he could support such a good cause was to perform in concert. All the proceeds to go to Cudeca, with tickets available online at

www.unicaja.es or www.generaltickets.com and prices range from €15 and €40.

Malaga Charity Gala Dinner

Since 2007, Cudeca have been organising one of Málaga’s most prestigious charitable events for individuals and businesses, an open-air  Charity Gala Dinner. The event commences with a cocktail reception, followed by a 3-course dinner with specially chosen wines. There is live music and an auction and raffle for fantastic prizes.  The event is held each July in the beautiful and renowned Botanical Gardens of the Finca de la Concepción in Málaga. Tickets are around €100 per head and the dress code is formal.

REM.fm BBQ Day

In 2008, Maurice Boland, local celebrity and owner of TRE.fm radio based in Marbella, had the great idea of running a BBQ day in aid of Cudeca. The idea, which will be repeated on an annual basis, is for TRE to nominate a Sunday in August when people will be encouraged to host a BBQ and get their guests to contribute to Cudeca for the meal. Hosts can register their BBQ with TRE and have Maurice call them live on air to chat with them and their guests. In 2008, this simple idea raised over €11,000 for Cudeca, so start planning your BBQ for next year!

Voices for Hospices (Bi-annual)

In October 2007, Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice organised three simultaneous concerts in different towns within the Málaga province, in Estepona, Nerja and Mijas Costa. The concerts were timed to coincide with, and celebrate, International World Hospice and Palliative Care day.

Thanks to the collaboration and support of the Town Halls in each town and the generosity of each of the musical groups, the Province of Málaga was able to join forces with the rest of the world in celebrating this very special day which has three primary aims :

  • To increase the availability of Hospice and Palliative Care throughout the world to meet those needs.
  • To raise awareness of the needs of people living with a terminal illness and their family.
  • To raise funds for the development of those services around the world.

Special thanks must go to the groups that put on such wonderful concerts. Taking part in the event were the "Ensemble Serenta" in Estepona, "Escúchala que se va" in Mijas Costa and the Coral Alminares" in Nerja.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until 2009 for the next such event, but if it is like the last one, it will be well worth the wait.

Cudeca Hospice´s "Light a Light" event is making a real seasonal impact on the community in the Costa del Sol. The event, which is normally held on a Friday evening about two weeks before Christmas, is designed to raise funds by asking friends and supporters to remember loved ones by contributing to the Christmas lights which are put around the outside of the Hospice in Benalmadena. The ligthts remain lit through the festive period through to January 6th - the traditional 12th night. At the "light a light" ceremony, choirs sing English Carols and Spanish Villancicos and this is accompanied by a raffle, bring and buy stalls with delicious homemade cakes and stalls selling Christmas cards and commemorative calendars.
