It is with a mixture of feelings that we inform you that Susan Hannam retired at the end of December 2011. It will be a loss for Cudeca not to have Susan in her active role of nurse, confidant and friend, but the good news is that Susan will continue as a volunteer from the New Year. She will carry on her great work of Counselling for patients and families as well as using her skills and knowledge wherever her help is needed. Susan has also accepted an invitation to join the Board of Trustees which means she will continue to be part of the management of the Foundation.

 

In 1991 Susan committed her support as a Founder Member of Cudeca as part of the first group to sign their allegiance to help in our endeavour to create a Hospice. In 1992 when Cudeca charity was registered, Susan became the first volunteer nurse, working with Dra. Marisa Martin, responding to calls for help from patients suffering from advanced cancer. They devoted their time on a voluntary basis to the home care of patients until we were able to contract our first doctor and nurse. Susan continued as a volunteer to be involved in the training of volunteers and the important aspect of public relations and fundraising as well as general management. In 1995 Susan made history being the first employee of Cudeca as the volume of patients increased and a more formal situation was necessary.

 

Her colleagues and many friends donated a gift of a Waterman’s Luxury gold nib fountain pen which was presented to her together with a Tiffany style table lamp from the Foundation. We all thank Susan for her devotion to Cudeca Hospice and her special care of patients and families during the past 20 years and wish her a long and healthy retirement.
